1965 on Bainbridge Island
In 1965 on Bainbridge Island in Washington state, Joel Pritchard, a congressman, and Bill Bell, a businessman, found themselves with bored children on an afternoon. They wanted a badminton game but lacked the equipment needed - their creative minds sparking into action when lowering a badminton net, using ping-pong paddles from Ping Pong, and using perforated plastic balls similar to Wiffle balls inspired them to invent Pickleball as they came up with its name
Named for Joan Pritchard's nickname of Joel in their marriage, Joan gave the game its playful name of Pickle Ball; possibly alluding to leftover nonstarters from crew races known as Pickle Boats or simply being part of its name itself! Some even believe Pickles was behind its creation while Joel himself maintains its history predated his canine companion!
Taking Roots and Growing
Pickleball quickly caught on among both the Pritchard family and neighbor Bob O'Brian's backyard; soon, permanent pickleball courts appeared throughout. By 1968, Pickle Ball Inc was established, solidifying its increasing popularity - wooden paddles and kits were produced accordingly to keep pace with demand.
In the 1970s, many notable milestones occurred for pickleball. In 1976, its inaugural tournament took place, featuring participants using large paddles with softball-sized plastic balls as weaponry. National Observer and Tennis Magazine ran articles about it that introduced it to wider audiences.
From Humble Beginnings to National Recognition
In the early 1980s, the United States Amateur Pickleball Association, now commonly referred to as USA Pickleball, officially formed and standardized its rules with the publication of an initial official rulebook in 1984. By the 1990s Pickleball had spread throughout all 50 United States.
Pickleball experienced an exponential surge of interest at the dawn of this millennium. Senior communities quickly adopted it for its social aspects and ease of learning its rules; its accessibility further fueled its spread worldwide and dedicated courts emerged everywhere. Today millions worldwide play pickleball!
